Every teacher knows that before the hard work of learning can begin, students need to feel safe and welcomed into the classroom community. The best way to do that, is to have students learn to work together as a team.

5 Team Building Activities for High School Students

Pass the Ball Categories- Split the class into 2 or 3 teams. Have them make a circle and give them an item to pass around. Then announce the categories such as types of cars. Each student in the circle must name a car and when they do, they can pass the item to the next person who must also name a car. The first group to get the item all the way around the circle wins.

Picture Memory- On a Smartboard or projector, display an image with multiple objects for about 30 seconds. Then switch it off or change the tab. Have each team place a sticky note with their name in the location of an item that you call out. The team that picks the closest placement wins.

Keep the Balloon Up- Have each group sit in a circle or at a table. Each team has a balloon that they must keep up. Make it more difficult by adding rules such as they must always be seated or they can only use their left hand, etc. Add more balloons if the groups are doing well. The team left with their balloons still up, win the game.

Remember the Next Passer- This can be done inside with small classes or outside with larger classes. Students make a circle and pass the ball around. Each student must pass the ball to the same person. It cannot be the person next to them on either side. The class must pass the ball back and forth around the circle and follow the exact order. To make it more challenging, have them reverse the order. You can also add a clap or stomp in-between each pass.

Copycat- Make a circle and send one student out of the room. Designate a secret leader. Everyone in the circle must copy their movements. The student outside returns and has to figure out the leader.
